Introduction

Rite Aid started out as a small discount store back in 1962. The store was initially known as Thrif D Discount Center. A few years of growth in ThrifD Discount Center, adopted its name as you know it now, and became a public company in 1968. Rite Aid is currently a major drugchain store on the east coast. Rite Aid is also traded on the NYSE under the stock symbol RAD. In the summer of 2006, there was a big announcement that Rite Aid would be merging with Brooks Eckerd Pharmacy from the Canadian based group, Jean Coutu Group for $3.4 billion. The merger was finally approved by shareholders on January 18 2007. After this merger, and after closing unnecessary stores, Rite Aid became the third largest drug trade retailer in the country behind Walgreens and CVS.
